In an industrial wastewater treatment application, a slurry is a waste product that is generated from a manufacturing process.  Due to high disposal costs, the goal is to reduce the amount of wastewater that is sent for disposal.  Since wastewater disposal cost is based on the quantity of waste to be hauled, the goal in these applications is to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to disposal facilities.  The filter press takes a slurry, often from a sludge thickening tank and condenses the solids into a filter cake by forcing the liquid through the filter press membranes, thereby concentrating the solids.  The drier cake will reduce the overall sludge volume.  The liquid, or filtrate, can then be sent back to the waste treatment system for further treatment or in some applications, can be used for non-critical rinses or it can be sent to a final pH adjust before being reused or sent to the sewer for disposal.
