Definition of Invert in Construction
The term invert usually relates to the bottom of a pipe, basin, culvert, or other liquid systems.
The invert is generally recognized by the lowest level of the pipe. This level is particularly important for engineers and contractors to ensure positive liquid flow within the pipe system. This means that fluids will flow from a high point to a low point along the established shape. Invert levels must be coordinated to ensure alignment with other components within the building. If the pipe relates to floor drainage, the invert levels need to be underground; if the levels refer to existing water bodies, then the invert levels should align with the water surface levels. On construction projects, detailed specifications of the invert levels are essential to ensure positive drainage within the pipe systems, on the ground surface, as well as to guarantee that all mechanical systems operate correctly within the structure. The invert levels of internal pipes are shown unless they flow towards standing water, typically coordinated by the mechanical engineer alongside civil/site engineers.
