Hey guys. I need to get some parts machined.

Other than using a dremel, grinder, drill press etc, I have no experience with metal fabrication. How does one normally go about getting precision parts made? In my case, I want to change the frame of my scooter and I also need some new motor mounts - preferably aluminum.

This is an intentionally broad question I'm fishing for information.

Location?

I know of several metal fab/machine shops and laser/waterjet cutting shops in the Seattle, WA area, I can recommend. But you'll want to find a shop close to you, especially if the parts are expensive to ship.

For the most precise parts, you will want to draw up a CAD file (DWG or DXF) or a really clear, dimensioned hand drawing.

I'm in Knoxville, TN. I'm guessing the best bet for me is to just start calling shops in the area and see what I find.

What do you want? Do you have any pics or drawings? How big are the parts. Many have Cnc hobby mills quite capable of most things.

Originally I wanted a motor mount but I think I might just adapt one from either http://diyelectricskateboard.com or http://www.aliendrivesystems.com.

I have no doubt there are other parts that I'd like to have machined in the near future, so it's kind of an open-ended question for when that time comes.
