“Surgical instruments represent one of the largest expenses for an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC), making it essential to evaluate potential suppliers to ensure they provide additional resources that can maximize long-term savings on your purchases,” says Mr. Anthony. “While low-cost surgical instruments may stand out, if the quality is not backed by value-added resources, the benefits of your purchase will likely be short-lived.”
Mr. Anthony highlights five critical questions to consider when selecting a cost-effective supplier for surgical instruments.
A supplier should ideally provide two guarantees: one for manufacturer defects and the other for free repair of its instruments, states Mr. Anthony. “A company that offers such a program demonstrates its commitment to its products.”
If not, the supplier should offer a partnership program to help the surgery center reduce costs and gain value for instruments, diamond knives, specialty products, and sterilization products, says Mr. Anthony. “Ambler Surgical found it incredibly beneficial to establish the Ambler Alliance for this purpose,” he adds.
Selecting a supplier that offers expert repair services and expertise in maintaining micro-surgical ophthalmic instruments is crucial, according to Mr. Anthony.
The supplier should offer a resource center where customers can find information and training materials on the use and maintenance of all surgical devices, notes Mr. Anthony.
According to Mr. Anthony, it's vital to ask various questions to determine if the supplier does more than just sell instruments to the surgery center: What resources are available to support the center’s staff? Are informative emails or newsletters provided? Are exclusive offers with industry partners presented that provide opportunities for continuing education, infection prevention and control services, or association memberships? It should be clear that the supplier strives to engage and educate the surgery center rather than merely functioning as a supply vendor,” he states.
Quality, cost, service, and value are key factors to consider when purchasing surgical instruments for outpatient surgery centers, according to Marty Anthony, President of Ambler Surgical, a provider of surgical ophthalmic instruments based in Exton, Pa.
“Surgical instruments are one of the largest expenses in an ASC, making it vital to assess the provision of additional resources that can help maximize long-term savings when selecting a surgical instrument company,” advises Mr. Anthony. “While low-cost surgical instruments may seem appealing, if the quality is not supported by value-added resources, you might find that the benefits of your purchase are only temporary.”
As Mr. Anthony emphasizes, asking the right questions during the selection process can significantly impact the overall success and financial viability of a surgery center.
