Buying used tanks?

When contemplating the purchase of pre-owned tanks, it's crucial to consider their condition and longevity. For instance, my experience with a custom-made 65-gallon tank lasted approximately nine years before encountering issues. After three relocations, I decided to upgrade to a larger capacity tank while leaving the 65-gallon tank empty indoors under air-conditioned conditions for six more years. Eventually, I noticed the silicone seals inside this tank were deteriorating, necessitating a thorough cleaning and reapplication of silicone. Although I managed to set up the tank again, it ultimately developed a leak at the joints after about another five and a half years. The slow leak allowed for the safe rescue of all inhabitants, but I ended up replacing it completely. This experience underscored several key points: First, always check for the manufacturing date printed on the bottom of the tank. Secondly, understand that prior stress conditions applied by previous owners, such as varying temperature exposure and movement, can heavily impact your tank's condition. Lastly, superficial repairs, like re-sealing silicone, can temporarily help but do not restore structural integrity; that strength relies on the unaltered silicone between the glass layers. For larger tanks, the force of the water is significant – a fact confirmed by both personal experience and professional builders. Ultimately, the best approach for ensuring durability is to carefully disassemble and properly rebuild the tank. However, take care to prevent edge chipping during disassembly, or the tank may become unsalvageable.
