Health & Medical

Nearly 70 percent of women remove body hair, according to a study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. Most report doing so for sexual reasons or to look good in a bathing suit. But for hair removal, the phrase "pain is beauty" couldn't be more true. Most women are familiar with razor burn, inward hair growth, post-treatment irritation and even allergic reactions to products. Women go to considerable lengths to have smooth, hair-free bodies.

Women don't just sacrifice comfort-they sacrifice money, too. Bikini waxes from Salon sell for as much as $50, and those with sugar can cost as much as $70. Keeping up with these professional services on a regular basis can get expensive, so many women turn to trying them at home. Here are tips from SINCOHEREN for expert hair removal at home.

Add sugar

Although adding sugar has actually been something humans have been doing for centuries, it has only recently gained new momentum in modern civilization. For women who are tired of traditional options like shaving or waxing, adding sugar is now a popular method of hair removal. In short: It involves rubbing a sugary product over the skin in a rolling motion to pull the hair away.

If you plan to add sugar, be sure to let your hair grow to 1/4 inch for best results. The sugar mixture needs to catch something. It is important to regularly moisturize and exfoliate the areas you wish to sugar, but stop exfoliating two to three days before adding sugar to avoid irritation.

After completing this process, make sure to avoid sunlight, chlorine or cosmetics in the treated area for 48 hours.

Waxing

If you prefer waxing for hair removal, there are a few main types: wax strips, hard waxes and soft waxes. Wax strips will be the cleanest and are suitable for large areas. If you prefer traditional waxing, wax is good for sensitive areas (such as the bikini line or underarms) and soft wax is good for large areas such as the legs.

Exfoliate the area to be waxed regularly, but stop 24 hours before the actual waxing. Make sure the area is free of sores or cuts - if so, wait for them to heal before waxing - otherwise the product will get inside and cause irritation. Clean the area immediately prior to waxing. Remember to pull the wax out in the opposite direction of the hair growth for best results and to prevent bruising.

Also, avoid sunlight, saunas, steam rooms and chlorine for 24 hours after waxing.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal has become very popular because of its effectiveness. It virtually stops hair growth and most women can go a long time without having to do this at all (or do it again) once they get into a good cycle. One simple way to describe lasers is that the light emitted by the laser device damages the hair follicles, limiting their ability to grow.

It is important to know that traditional hair lasers are not suitable for darker skin tones - they require a contrast between lighter skin and darker hair to work.

It's a good idea to shave a few days before the laser. Keeping the hair short helps the device find the roots of the hair. Avoid using retinoids and similar irritating products and do not exfoliate after laser hair removal.

Important: Do not remove pubic hair at home with the laser. Leave it to the professionals.

Shaving

If you prefer an old-fashioned shave, there are a few tips to help make the process go smoothly and give you the best results. If it's been a while since you've shaved, start by taking a pair of scissors and a comb to the area to remove longer pubic hairs - you don't want them getting caught in your razor.

It's a good idea to keep the area moist between shaves and use a pre-shave oil as well as a shaving gel before shaving. For best results, shave immediately after a shower or bath. Hot water helps soften the hair follicles. If inward growth is a problem for you, look into products like this one to deal with those issues.
